HAAS Home Technologies.

We partnered with HAAS Home Technologies to design a world-class interface design for their client's in-home Crestron home automation system. The design objective was a complete overhaul of the existing visual UI and overall user experience of the entire system and redesign it from the ground up to suit a custom, future CH5 rollout. The client, Jonathan Coon, is the CEO of 1-800 Contacts and he contracted us to design a bespoke Crestron UI for his personal residence that would also be installed in his 100-unit housing development project, and would also be sold as a customer-facing, out-of-box sales solution to HAASHT's Crestron customers once CH5 is readily customizable.

01 The problem

Straight outta 2004.

The client was completely underwhelmed by the lack of Crestron UI options available to him as a customer.

We had the distinct advantage of having primary insights directly from our main users. The recurring theme was that the out-of-the-box visual UI and concurrent user experience, namely the navigation flow and overarching usability, were not in line with the expectations of the client given the robust technology under the hood and the hefty price tag that comes with a Crestron system. The client wanted a better, more delightful, completely customized experience using the system in his home.

02 The approach

A little navigation TLC.

03 The good stuff

From clunky to clean.

01

Global services control

We wanted the flow throughout the entire system to be seamless and effortless. A dedicated main page shows frequent or preset actions at a global home level to allow the user to be able to quickly perform often-accessed tasks which reduces friction of having to navigate multiple levels deep into the information architecture. The user also has the ability to choose between a services-based or room-based navigation at the root level. The services actions ultimately lead to a granular room level view of each service, putting the focus on easily controlling any room in the house from anywhere.

Challenge solved: Cohesive information architecture
02

Room based navigation

Challenge solved: Complete, connected experience

A breath of fresh smart home air.

04 The resolution

Immersive new visual UI.

The solution showcases a fresh, modern upgrade to the existing bland, clunky out-of-box Crestron UI design.

Not only does the design let the incredible smart home technology shine, but it also offers an improved user experience and fixes crucial design usability issues that are commonly associated with Crestron interfaces.
